Cribma FAQs

A few useful answers.

How to use the map, what the numbers mean and what is available today.

Where should I start?

Open Search and add the places you regularly go. Set your household, budget and priorities, then apply. On a phone, use Setup, Map, Matches, Priorities and Costs to move between views without scrolling past the map. No account or payment is required.

What does a match score mean?

A higher score means an area fits more of your stated preferences. Factor bars show individual scores out of 100, not percentage weights. Each ranked place represents its best hexagon, roughly 860 m across. Selecting its score zooms to that hexagon.

Distance is measured in a straight line. Transit scores measure nearby stop density, not journey time or service frequency. A score cannot confirm a rental is available.

Are these current asking rents?

No. CMHC figures are annual survey averages for existing rental stock, labelled with their survey year wherever a rent is shown. They can be up to eleven months old, and current asking rents often cost more.

Several hexagons share a larger rent survey zone. An unpublished figure can mean the survey sample was too small or the area was not covered. Missing rent is not treated as zero.

How accurate are the nearby-place figures?

Amenity distances run from the hexagon centre in a straight line, not along a walking route. Park distance is to mapped park geometry, not an entrance. OpenStreetMap coverage varies, so an unmapped feature may still exist.

Stop counts use a 500 m radius, or 800 m for rapid transit. They do not account for frequency, accessibility or journey time. Population figures estimate hexagon residents from census-area centroids.

Official Walk Score and Bike Score are not included. The Google Maps link opens the area centre, not a specific rental address.

Can I see exact available rentals here?

Not yet. The Rentals tab opens searches on external sites. Cribma does not currently receive a listing feed, verify availability or display live asking rents. Check the original posting before making a decision.

What do bedrooms, pets and the other filters change?

Budget and unit sizes help compare area rent figures. Home type, pets, bathrooms, furnished, laundry and parking shape rental search links where the destination supports them. Some filters must be set again on that site. They do not verify an available home has those features.

What does the Costs tab estimate?

It estimates electricity, one household internet connection and one tenant-insurance policy from your household and home-type answers. It shows a planning range before taxes and fees, not an exact bill or quote. Mark electricity or internet included when your rent covers them.

The rent-ceiling scenario adds your own budget to these extras. Your budget is not an asking rent or a forecast of available homes. Separate gas/water, vehicles, parking, food and moving costs are excluded. Adult transit-pass scenarios are shown separately without guessing routes, children’s ages or discount eligibility.

Open Calculate from actual bills for an exact manual subtotal. Blank entries stay unknown. Neither estimates nor manual amounts alter rankings or your budget. Leaving or reloading the search page clears the worksheet; amounts are not saved or included in shared links.

Where do cost ranges come from?

Inputs checked 2026-11-04. The range responds to your answers; prices are dated reference inputs, not live provider quotes. These are source-informed planning allowances, not measured percentile or confidence intervals. Actual bills can fall outside them.

  • Electricity starts with BC Hydro’s apartment and detached-home monthly averages, spanning electric and non-electric heating. We apply the tiered tariff to a 30-day month, widen usage for variability, apply a rough household-size adjustment around a 2-person reference, and round outward. The household adjustment is our heuristic, not an empirically fitted coefficient.
  • Self-contained suites use an apartment proxy. Townhouses or any-home selections use the apartment-to-detached envelope. Room-share electricity and internet remain unknown unless you explicitly mark them included. Separate gas heating and water charges are not estimated.
  • Internet is a 50 to 100 CAD allowance informed by advertised Novus plans plus headroom. Building coverage and contract conditions vary; this is not a Novus availability or price promise.
  • Insurance is a 15 to 60 CAD allowance informed by Square One’s advertised starting premium and APOLLO’s policy-book average. It is not a quote, market-wide average or price ceiling. Unrelated roommates may need separate policies.

What happens when I save or share a search?

Saved searches stay in this browser. A shared results link encodes your search, including place labels and coordinates, so the recipient can see those details. Address searches and map tiles use external services.

Where does the data come from?

CMHC rental surveys, TransLink stops, Statistics Canada geography and population, and OpenStreetMap amenities. The About page shows the actual bundled editions and their limitations.
